faithful- What was the ONE movie that frightened you?
Wax- Something beyond comprehension is happening to a little girl on this street, in this house. A man has been called for as a last resort to try and save her. That man is... The Exorcist.
But the film of course... and the book... can easily be utilized for the universal terror they hold for every adult male without even touching upon religion in any way.
Surprisingly few grasp it without having it pointed out however and this often amazes me.
The problem of course is power: I could drop Jason from Friday the 13th in a matter of moments (in fact I could just out-run him!)
Freddy is just supernatural and thus nothing to be feared by someone who believes in the natural.
But little Regan from the Exorcist?
The monster isn't her of course... but something inside of her. Something that can not be touched without hurting her... something alot like cancer don't you think?
At its' base (and not coincidentally where it is most powerful) the story is not supernatural but all too real.
Of course there are overtones and religious dogma but in a way that simply re-inforces the natural horror involved.
Every parent has an idea of the fear involved.
A child is born with... something 'wrong'.
A child 'develops' cancer or any other malady.
I don't believe for one moment that there has ever been a parent facing the destruction of a child he/she created who has not at least mementarily thrown themselves on dogma in the hope of a miracle.
It is possible... possible at least... that at least some found protection there and some miracle (divine or not) allowed them sanctuary.
I myself found the door of a Catholic church after the death of my own daughter even if I found no comfort there.
The theme is universal: I would rather face a hundred Kings and a thousand killers than to see my child suffer or die.
My child died quickly but any parent secretly loses some mental capacity at the thought of what happens to Regan in that story.
Demon or simply cancer... a head injury that causes brain damage perhaps... it is all the same.
