I think the "lies" are that the anti-gun crowd tries to make gun shows out to be this great lawless free-for-all where any criminal can just walk in and buy a gun. This really isn't the case. The majority of people that purchase space at these shows are FFL holders, licensed dealers that are required to run a background check when selling a gun. Some gun shows will require all exhibitors to have an FFL, but not all. There are some gun shows that allow anyone wanting to sell off a collection or whatever to purchase space.
It is these sellers that aren't required to run a background check on buyers.
And, yes, anyone can require a background check when doing a face to face sale. All that would entail is both buyer and seller going to a gun store, paying around $30, and have the store run an instant check on the buyer. This is not required by law though.

I'm thinking these tactics by the anti-gun crowd would be easily disproved because this isn't the case. Making claims such as they apparently make should, therefore, be unbenificial to them. However, using this crowd's mistaken beliefs as proof that the anti-gun crowd is a bunch of whackos and therefore mentions of any gun control is equally whacko, may be benificial to the pro-gun lobbyists. I think there is a more sane middle-ground crowd with substantial numbers. Any idea if my last thought is somewhat true or is the anti-gun, as in no guns at all, crowd really a force? I don't really know as I've never felt threatened by too few or too many guns and so never got too involved either way.
Actually, one of the reasons I don't really like Hillary Clinton is a speech she gave in Florida where she claimed guns are responsible for 19* children's deaths every day. A simple check showed this number to be accurate only if manipulaated beyomnd the actual impression of her comments. The use of this statistic didn't give more credence to her crowd-pandering, for me, so I would think it wouldn't give more to any ability she might have to make "gunless America" laws.
Certinly the promoters of gun shows, in many cases I'm sure, are hoping to make a little profit from thier shows much like other shows and some feel the appeal of profit means allowing cash payment to be the determining factor. Some may feel cash alone is not enough and some feel FFL only is the way to go.
* Something like that. The number basically used the assumption that we are all somebody's child.
