Hi, I'm after some advice. My son and daughter seem to be allergic to tomatoes. I went to see my doctor and he said just keep them off tomatoes. Easier said than done!

My son comes up with a rash on his face but my daughter is worse. She had blisters on her hand and red spots all over her face. The problem is they're only 1 and 3 years old and such picky eaters. Plus I don't even know if its tomatoes or something else. Has anyone else dealt with this and got any advice?

Thanks

I would say take them to an allergist. Or get a referral to take them to an allergist. A general practitioner will not be able to diagnose such a thing.

You need a specialist.

If your babies are reacting to something in their diet, the best way--at their ages--is to eliminate a food at a time. Say, you eliminate tomato products, but the babies still break out. What's the next thing they both eat? Pureed peas? Eliminate pureed peas. If they still break out, put those back and eliminate pureed carrots--and so on.

Did your 3 yr. old react to any food products before you had your second child?. If so, that would be a good start. If not, that's a good start as well.

I wouldn't take them to an allergist at this point--they're simply too young. And if they're picky eaters, that may be because they instinctively know what isn't good for them.

Good luck. I hope you solve this soon.

What is the problem? Stop eating tomatoes as well. At any rate, tomatoes are very harmful for your kidneys. Thus your little children wouldn't be able to get any ketchup and you would be able to check whether they are allergic to tomatoes or not.

the problem is so many things have tomatoes in... i cut them out then notice a rash again. ive told my sons school to keep him off tomatoes, im going to see my gp about a referral but i want to collect as much info as possible, it started about 8 months ago, but i only really got to search properly yesturday on the internet cos i had no internet. i have no problems with tomatoes so i keep them for night time as my kids eat the same things as me. my son loved tomato ketch up for ages then as soon as my daughter reacted my son did so it maybe be a change in ingredients.

i went to a website the other day and a lot of other people were saying how harmful the are so i really want to get them checked out. i just need lots of kiddie friendly food w/o tomatoes.

thanx for all the advice

So your babies are almost 2 and 4. Time to give them solids--but not necessarily what you eat. A lot of what you eat may not be good for them.

I googled common childrens' food allergies and surprisingly tomatoes aren't listed. It's interesteing that your daughter reacted first, and then your son--and that your daughter's reaction is more severe than your son's.

An allergist will probably recommend avoidance as the first step and then go on to pin-prick testing on the kid's backs.

Again, good luck--and the sooner the better. An allergic reaction can lead to anaphelactic shock. In the meantime, feed youself and your babies bland, non-processed and un-condimented (? word?) foods until it's all sorted out. Keep us posted, please.

Yes you do, but here's some good news: This most likely is not a true tomato allergy, as those are pretty rare. Your best bet is to keep up with exactly when the symptoms occur. Food allergies will show themselves very soon after the food is eaten. This will be helpful in determining whether it's a true allergy, or just a food intolerance--that's not to say that they should just eat the ketchup anyway, nonono, but rather that perhaps it's just one particular brand they are having a reaction to, or they both may have a true sensitivity to that particular food.

Are they having similar reactions to any other foods???

I try and keep my kids food healty, i.e. mash veg... chicken etc... but i cant seem to get them to eat them... even through bribery... i try hiding food, but then they decide they dont like that so i end up going to unhealthy food... not too unhealthy, usually chips, but i do watch what they eat. i know its tomato ketch up for my daughter cos i went into a cafe with her and she had it, n we walked out and all red... i think hives??? came up all over her cheeks, ive completely banned it out of food, but i find the only substitute is either beans or gravy cos they wont eat it without.

As for giving them different food to them and we have different, theyd still want my food anyway. Although i cant seem to get them to eat very much lately, There a good weight..

This is the site i found on tomato allergies. i dont know about raw tomatoes they wont touch them anyway.

I'm gonna ring my health visiter tomorrow... so wish me luck...

Yeah, it's probably hives. Ask your health visitor if it's unusual for a not-quite two year old to have food allergies other than lacto-intolerance. I always wanted to know.

Chips is an unhealthy food. The only way to make your children eat healthy food is to put in order this matter. Don't hide uhealthy food, but there mustn't be such food at home. Be an example for them, because if you eat chips and ketchup( but it is not allowed for your children) they will start to play up for sure.
