In the past decade or so, though, physicists and cosmologists have started to move away from The Big Bang theory and into other theories like string and superstring theory, modified by theories of dark energy and dark matter, and expanding and contracting universe and multiple dimensions. All of which you can all al la carte or as a prix fix meal, with or without God on the side, with Shiva for desert.

The likelihood of each of the current cosmological hypotheses being is certainly small, but the the Big Bang remains the most likely at this point in time. Maybe as a result of the CERN experiments one of the other hypotheses will become more likely and take over as the Theory Du Jour. There might even be an entirely new hypothesis generated as a result. The only hypothesis that CERN could not provide additional data on is Intelligent Creation.

I am curious about the "Doomsday" scenarios being bandied about concerning the LHC. So called main stream scientists are pretty categorical in saying the predicted disasterous result of a shower of singularities is so unlikely as to be nonexistent. On the other hand...what if they are, as they frequently have been, wrong about this?

On the other hand, if the doomsayers are right, the scenario goes as follows....

Four to six months down the road, a bright unusual light appears out in the middle of the Indian ocean. A light that grows larger as time goes on.

Another four months later, on the opposite side of the planet, another light appears.

Next thing you know, the oceans are sucked into an odd little hole and six months later there's nothing left of the planet aside from a dark little space void of all light.

This whole situation reminds me of the development of the nuclear bomb. There was a small group of scientiests that thought there was a remote possibility that it could start a chain reaction that would blow up the whole Earth.

If the Manhattan Project hadn't be super-secret the media would have reported what the small group thought and the world would have panicked, brought their troops home to be with their families at the end, and WWII would have ended with a whimper instead of a bang.

The CERN experiment started yesterday, ahead of schedule. There have been no 'breaking' news stories about any disasterous results, so I'll go to sleep in peace and not worry about the black hole that's 'out to get me.'

Four to six years, Stone...which ties in quite nicely with my December 2012 doomsday prediction...lol

I think that the experiments will go ahead safely, but lets consider something else: Possibly we haven't heard from Extraterrestrial Civilizations yet, because if a civilization does not destroy itself from war, then there is a further risk from their technology creating a black hole which destroys their planet.

Perhaps the technological paths of most Galactic civilizations, cause them to create black holes which ends the civilization.

Just some musings, which are off-topic.
